Top 7 Safest Countries in Europe to Visit
Iceland

Iceland is a magical country, filled with astounding natural attractions including glaciers, majestic waterfalls, ice caves, and many more! According to the Global Peace Index (GPI), it ranks as the safest country in Europe. Interestingly, it has held that title since 2008.
Because it has a small population, many visitors coming here feel the warmth of belongingness and being a part of a community. Crimes including petty and violent incidents are unusual in this island nation. It’s also an ideal destination for solo travelers and since it has an intensive gender equality program, women-related violence is almost non-existent.
The main concern to watch out for is possible natural disasters to happen. Solo travelers, in particular, should take extra caution when hiking Iceland’s rugged terrains.

Ireland

Known for its friendly morning greeting, Ireland is dubbed the second safest country in Europe. Millions of tourists visit the island nation to see its thriving cultural heritage, imposing coastlines, and verdant terrains. Crime levels, even in touristy areas, are uncommon in Ireland, thanks to the country’s programs to address such issues.
But of course, it’s basic to apply personal safety protocols. Also, take extra caution when going for a drink since records show that a few crimes in the country are linked to alcohol consumption.
The road system in Ireland is undeniably outstanding. But when traveling to remote areas, be wary of possible potholes.

Denmark
While Denmark is famous for its gender equality program, it is also among the safest European countries. It has among the lowest levels of violent crime and organized conflict. This can be attributed to the government’s program to boost the happiness level of the citizens by addressing social issues.
Although petty crimes are uncommon in big cities, do observe basic safety protocols such as securing valuables.
Unlike many other countries in Europe, Denmark has a low vulnerability to natural disasters. This makes it an ideal destination for those chasing natural wonders including forests, lakes, and rivers.
The Economist has tagged Copenhagen among the safest cities in Europe and in the world.

Austria

With its rich history and incredible architectural landmarks, Austria is certainly a must-see for every traveler visiting Europe. This landlocked country, albeit its size, has played a significant role in shaping the continent’s history, especially during the medieval period. Here’s the added catch.
It’s among the safest European countries, owing largely to its social programs geared toward improving quality of life.
Even petty crimes are incredibly low. Even when traveling via public transport or walking in crowded areas, the risk of being pickpocketed is far from a possibility. But again, it’s still a good idea to keep your valuables close. When walking during the night, always remain vigilant, especially from drunk elements lurking around.
In terms of natural disasters, mudslides and avalanches can happen anytime. So make sure to visit the country during good weather conditions. It’s also important to keep the authorities notified when traveling solo to its mountains and other natural destinations.

What are my favorite travel must-haves?
As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!
- Warm packable jacket – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
- Transparent toiletry bag – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
- Kindle Paperwhite – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
- Powerbank – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
- Travel Adapter – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.
Portugal
Portugal certainly tops the list of many tourists’ preferred travel destinations in Europe. That’s a no-brainer given the country’s old history and the creative landscapes that formed through the years. For centuries, the country has dominated naval history, especially during colonial times.
Despite its relatively small size and population, Portugal has left imprints on various continents, especially in the spread of Catholicism.
Based on the GPI’s 2022 report, Portugal ranks among the safest countries in Europe, specifically, the fifth. It has a stable relationship with its neighboring countries and the political system is considered well-managed.
Pickpocketing, however, is the main issue that travelers need to contend with, especially in crowded destinations or when on public transport. Even religious destinations are not spared from this petty crime.
That is why it’s imperative to always remain vigilant and to attend to your belongings. It’s also a good idea to avail of travel insurance.
Scams targeting tourists can also happen, especially since Portugal is a famous destination and a pilgrimage site. So be wary and never easily respond to offers especially when money is involved.
But that’s just it. Overall, Portugal is a can’t-miss destination that is generally safe as long as you stick to basic safety protocols.

Slovenia
Slovenia is one of the most underrated destinations in Europe. But tourists are missing a lot when they don’t visit the country. After all, it offers some of the most amazing views including a rich cultural and historical heritage. The most famous of which is Lake Bled which has been featured in various international travel publications and websites.
There is not much issue when it comes to political instability or violent crimes. It’s an extremely safe destination due to the low rate of militarization. That is why, both intrepid families and solo travelers are a fit category for this destination.
Scams are extremely low but there are reports of taxi drivers charging extra amounts. So it’s always a good idea to check the standard price and refuse to ride if the driver overcharges. Also, make sure to notify agencies when traveling solo to remote destinations or use a GPS when hiking in the mountains. Getting lost in the wilderness can happen.

The Czech Republic

Home to the most number of castles in Europe, the Czech Republic is a must-see destination. Like Austria, it has contributed to the creative, political, and social development of Europe despite its relatively small size and population. Its most visited destination is its gothic capital city of Prague, a hub of impressive landmarks and imposing castles and churches.
Violent crimes are rare in the Czech Republic and terrorism risk is very low. Tourists, however, are encouraged not to stray into deserted sections of the cities since that is where most unlawful acts happen.
During the spring months, flooding can happen so make sure to check the weather forecast before visiting. Have a level of flexibility with your plans.
The main thing that tourists should watch out for is scams especially when in Prague. There are incidents of waiters in restaurants scamming guests, especially first-timers. So always be vigilant and make sure that prices are well accounted for before paying.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?
Remember this: anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!
The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with SafetyWing was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.
I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.
Read my post about why you should get travel insurance for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from SafetyWing – they’re the best, in my opinion.
